Biographical history
Fue un político neerlandés del Partido Laborista (PvdA) e historiador. Fue miembro del Consejo Municipal de Ámsterdam (1962-1971), miembro de la Cámara de Representantes (1967-1981; 1982-1983), ministro del Interior (1981-1982; 1994), alcalde de Ámsterdam (1983-1994) y miembro del Senado (1999-2007).
Van Thijn también fue un autor prolífico, habiendo escrito más de una docena de libros desde 1977 sobre política , la historia de los judíos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial , la historia del socialismo y varias autobiografías . Era conocido por sus habilidades como gestor y analista político .
